The End

We are back in Ushuaia, Magnus is aboard for a few days and we are packing away. No more Bolgs now, but I will be adding photos to the daily reports in about 10 days, so please return and have a look.

Sol y lluvia

Yesterday was mixed. We started with a lovely walk in the sun and finished rowing the dinghy in a downpour. Today we head back to puerto Williams and are nearly at the end of our trip.

Ayer fue una mezcla. Empezamos caminando en el sol y terminamos en el chinchorro por la lluvia. Hoy volvemos a Puerto Williams y casi estamos al fin del viaje.

Wind and sun

Today is very variable with rain squals and strong winds interspersed with calm sunny spells. But it is stil glorious here in the mountains. We managed to cut a small mountain of firewood yesterday so Balaena will be very warm in winter.

Hay cambia mucho el tiempo. Hace chubascos con mucho viento con periodos de sol y calma. Ya esta maravillosa aquí en la Cordillera. Ayer hicimos un montón de leña, entonce Balaena estará muy caliente en invierno.

Stationary

This is a magic place and we are still enjoying it. Especially as today is warm and sunny. We have spledid views of the snowy mountains, forests and glaciers. There is wood on the beach which we are cutting for winter and I am cooking a flan to share with our Chilean/North American neighbours this evening.

Esta un lugar mágico y ya lo estamos disfrutando. Especialmente como hoy hace calor y sol. Hay vistas espléndidas de los bosques, nevadas y ventisqueros. Hay madera por la playa y estamos haciendo leña por invierno. También estoy haciendo un flan para compartir con los vecinos Chilena/norteamericano esta tarde.

Canal Beagle

A beautiful day sailing with the wind back down Canal Beagle. It has snowed in the mountains and above the trees everything is white, the glaciers are deep blue and the trees a vibrant green. Spectacular.

Un día hermosa navegando con viento a popa en el canal Beagle. Hace nieve en las montanas y encima de los árboles todo esto blanco, los ventisqueros son azules profundos y los árboles un verde vibrante. Espectacular.

More ice

Leif and I are visiting the glaciers in the Beagle Canal. It is very different here because the glaciers fall down the mountain slopes between green slopes and forests. Magnus has left Balaena to work a little on a friends charter yacht. He will then sail up to Punta Arenas with them and later fly home to NZ to finish his qualifications as an outdoor guide (a totally unnecessary formality because it would be hard to imagine a better companion, crew and shore guide - I feel certain he has a great future ahead of him). I uploaded a few photos to the blog but the connection was so slow that I had to give it up. So look again in a few weeks when I have had time with a better internet connection.

Leif y yo vamos a visitar los ventisqueros del Canal Beagle. Esta muy diferente aquí porqué los ventisqueros caen por las sierras entre faldas verdes y bosques - super linda. Magnus ha despedido de Balaena para trabajar por un velero chárter de amigos. Va a navegar con ellos hasta Punta Arenas y luego volver a NZ para terminar sus estudios. (Un formalidad innecesario porque ya esta una navegante, compañero, y guía sin igual - siento seguro que tenga un buen futuro.) He cargado unas fotos al Blog pero la conexión estaba tan lento que acabé. Miren otra vez en unas semanas cuando tenga tiempo con un buen conexión.

Civilisation

Now we are back in the bustle of a town with about 1000 inhabitants. enjoying the almost tropical warmth, fresh food and company of old friends, including a boat from Kerikeri in NZ!

Ahora estamos en el bullicio de un pueblo con alrededor de 100 ciudadanos. Disfrutamos el casi tropical calor, comidas frescas y la compañía de viejos amigos, incluyendo un barco de Kerikeri (nuestra puerto de origen) en NZ!

Good to rest

We slept all night through and have had a lazy day. We were lucky with the weather as today it is blowing strongly from the NW and would have made sailing very difficult on our crossing. It is a great relief to be back as the Southern Ocean is a nasty place for a little yacht.

Dormimos toda la noche y pasamos un día relajado. Teníamos suerte con el tiempo porque hoy hace viento fuerte desde el Nor-oeste, que había hecho navegando muy difícil por la travesía. Es un gran alivio volver porque el océano del sur es un mal lugar para un velero pequeño.

Chile

Hurrah, we are back in one piece! What a change to see green. Most people would think that this was one of the barrenest places on earth, but after Antarctica the stunted vegetation and windblown grass looks lush compared with hundreds of metres of ice and snow. It was very rough and windy passing Cape Horn but then the wind dropped and we landed up motoring in sunshine. We will take a couple of days in the small islands, Lennox and Picton, before returning to the bustle of civilisation in Puerto Williams. When we reach an internet connection I will add some photos to this Blog.

¡Hurra! Volvemos intacto. Que novedad ver verde. Mucha gente pueden pensar que esta es uno de los lugares mas estéril por el mundo, pero después de Antarctica las arbustos enanos y pasto cortado por el viento parecen exuberante en comparación con cientos de metros hielo y nieve. Por Cabo de Hornos hizo mar bravo y mucho viento pero después cayo el viento y seguíamos por motor bajo el sol. Pasaremos unos días por los islas pequeños, Lennox y Picton, antes de volver a la muchedumbre de civilización en Puerto Williams. Cuando tengo internet voy a poner unas fotos por el Blog.

Over 24 hours of very good sailing, mainly west wind and making fast progress. But the seas here are always irregular so it is never very confortable or pleasant. All is well, we are eating and sleeping and looking forward to arriving in Chile within 48 hours.

Navegabamos muy bien las últimas 24 horas, principalmente viento del oeste con buen velocidad. Pero los olas están siempre irregulares y nunca es tan cómodo o agradable. Todo esta bien, comemos, dormimos y esperamos llega en Chile dentro de 48 horas.

The second day has been mainly light winds from ahead and we have motored a lot. We expect stronger westerlies in a day. They should blow us in behind Cape Horn. The weather has not been too bad, no ice which is a great blessing. But we have had a few breakage's, a halyard and the furling line to the genoa and our topsail halyard is stuck fast. Bad maintenance!

El segundo día hico mas vientos ligeros y contrarios, entonces usamos el motor mucho. Esperamos vientos del oeste mas fuertes en un día. Van a traernos hasta Cabo de Hornos. El tiempo no hacia tan malo, sin hielo que es una bendición. Pero unas cosas se rota, una driza y la linea para controlar la genoa y la driza por una vela esta fuera de uso. !Malo mantenimiento!

Windy

We are still waiting for a suitable weather opportunity. There is a very deep depression right over us and we had a dramatic start to the day with strong winds and a French yacht near us on the rocks. They had a rope around their propeller and had no diving suit, so Magnus had to go and cut it free for them. We hope for better weather to come - watch this space.

Aún esperamos buen tiempo. Hay un depresión muy profundo encima de nuestra ubicación y el día empezó muy dramático con vientos fuertes y un velero Frances por las rocas cerca de nuestros. Tuvieron un soga alrededor de su hélice y no tuvieron traje de bucear. Entonces Magnus necesitó buceó para cortarlo para ellos. Esperemos que viene tiempo mejor...... miren por aquí.

Preparations

The weather is beautiful and we are in an extraordinary spot. There is a wall of ice 100m high on one side and a hill of snow 200m high on the other. The water is alive with seals. The sun is shining and it feels tropical. But out at sea a storm is brewing and we don't know when to leave. Perhaps it will pass tonight and we can set off for Cape Horn tomorrow.

Hace tiempo hermoso y estamos en un lugar extraordinario. Hay un precipicio de hielo de 100 metro por un lado y un monte de nieve por el otro. El mar esta lleno de focas. Hace sol y se siento tropical. Pero mar adentro estará un temporal y no sabemos cuando zarpar. Quizás pasará por la noche y mañana podemos salir con rumbo Cabo de Hornos.

Last port

Now we are in our last anchorage in Antarctica. We will wait for a good spell of weather to cross back to Cape Horn and Chile. All well on board with a tasty Pizza for dinner.

Skiing

Another hot sunny day, even though it started with frozen sea around Balaena overnight. We spent virtually the whole day skiing on a lovely slope behind the boat.

Calm

Dead calm today with strong sun. Started with a quick ski and then motored through unbelievably magnificent scenery. Roast beef for dinner and a penguin floor show.

Hoy no hay viento y hace mucho sol. Empiezó con un pequeño correr por esquí y luego navegamos por motor a través de paisaje muy lindo. Carne asado por la cena y entretenimiento gracias a los pingüinos.

Snow and Ice

Today Magnus and I climbed a small snow covered hill. He was on snow shoes and I on skis. It was hot and sunny and we only needed T shirts. From the top the view was stupendous. Coming down was a long slog for Magnus but for me it only took a few minutes - one of the best skis in my life and certainly finer scenery than any other ski field in the world. To add a little spice to his day, Magnus decided to go swimming, in my wet suit. He swam around a lot of ice flows and even met a few inquisitive seals. Now we will have barbecued fillet steak for dinner! Tough life this sailing in Antarctica!

Hoy Magnus y yo subimos un monte cubierto de nieve. El anduvo zapatos de nieve y yo esquí. Hace sol y calor y solo llevamos camisetas. Desde el cumbre la vista fue estupenda. Bajando fue mucho trabajo para Magnus pero muy rápido para mi - solo demora unos minutos - uno de los mejores correas de esquí de mi vida y sin duda mejor paisaje que cualquiera cancha de esquí en el mundo. Para mas entretenimiento Magnus nadaba, en mi traje de goma. Nadaba alrededor de unos témpanos y encontró con unas focas inquisitivas. Esta noche vamos a cenar carne por la parrilla. Muy duro esta vida navegando en Antártida.

T Shirt weather

We motored up to Hovgaard island in the sunshine and had some very close encounters with whales. Here we are tied up fore and aft and in total safety as this has several times been an overwitnering spot for yachts.

Easy day

People in Sweden are asking what Leif does when Magnus and I are cooking. Leif is the world champion in washing dishes. Never has a boat had dishes so clean as cleaned so quickly as on board Balaena. Today has been relaxed and pleasant with sun ALMOST strong enough to sit in T-shirts on deck. We have explored the islands a little and socialised a little more.

Los suecos me preguntan que haga Leif si Magnus y tu están cocinando. Leif es campeón mundial en lava platos. Nuca fuera un barco con platos tan limpio tan rápidamente como Balaena. Hoy estaba día de relax, muy agradable con el sol CASI tan fuerte para sentarse por camiseta por la cubierta. Exploramos las islas u poco y socializamos un poco mas.

Our furthest south

A gentle days motoring took us to Vernadsky, a Ukrainian base on a desolate clump of offshore islands. This will be our turning point. Funnily enough it is probably the warmest place we have been in Antarctica with very little snow and a lot of bare rock and even a little moss. The base personnel have painted palm trees on their fuel tank to underline this! On the journey there were a few highlights. We saw Adelie penguins, which means that Magnus and I have seen all types except Emperor. We met two cruise ships with friends on board, one had an old colleague of Leif's and the other a friend from Ushuaia.

Andabamos tranquilamente por motor hasta Vernadsky, un base ucraniano. Es ubicado por un as islas desoladas en el mar. Ahora damos vuelta. Graciosamente es el lugar mas caloroso que encontrabamos en Antarctica, hay poco nieve y aún un poco musgo. ¡La dotación del base han pintado palmeras por su estanque de combustible para subrayar este calor! Por la travesía encontramos pingüinos Adelie, que significa que Magnus y yo hemos visto todos con excepción de los Emperadores; encontrabamos dos cruceros, por uno fue un colega de Leif y por el otro un amigo de Ushuaia.

Quiet day

The weather is wild but we are in a very sheltered spot so can relax, read, write, play cards and prepare tasty food. We often think about you all who read this and hope that you are enjoying following our progress. We are now almost as far south as we can go, the ice is appreciably denser, so soon we will be heading north again and looking for a suitable patch of safe weather to cross back to Chile.

El tiempo esta borrascoso pero estamos en un lugar muy buen abrigado y podemos relajar, leer, escribir, jugar a las naipes, y hacer comidas ricas. Pensamos frecuentemente de ustedes que lean este y esperamos que disfrutan seguir la navegación. Estamos casi al último sur porque el hielo es mas grueso y difícil para navegar. Pronto vamos al norte y buscamos buen tiempo para volver a Chile

Scenery and more scenery

Today started and ended grey and cold, but just at the critical moment, when we sailed through the Strait of Lemaire (said to be the most scenic piece of Antarctica) the sun came out. With Magnus up the mast and Leif on the helm we pushed our way through a band of drifting ice to pass through this long narrow sound and now are securely moored in expectation of bad weather tonight.

Hoy empiezo y termino gris y frío, pero a el momento critico, cuando navegamos el Estrecho de Lemaire (dicen que es la mas hermosa parte de Antarctica) apareció el sol. Con Magnus encima por el mástil y Leif por timón empezamos tras los hielos para llego a un fondeadero seguro por la noche. Esperemos mal tiempo.

Port Lockroy

A nice quiet day in harbour with a visit to a restored British base, surrounded, as usual, by thousands of penguins. The anchorage is full of ice but luckily there is little wind so it is no bother to us. A cruise ship passed by with an old friend of Leif on board, sadly we were unable to make contact this time but hope to meet them again.

Un día tranquilo en el puerto. Visitamos un base Británico, rodeado con pingüinos, como siempre. El puerto es lleno con témpanos, pero con suerte no hay viento y no nos molestan. Un crucero pasaba con un viejo amigo de Leif abordo, pero no logramos hablar con ellos, esperamos que encontremos otra vez.

Snow storm

It was a windy night and snowed quite hard. We are three boats tied up together and had to get up several times to add more shore lines. It was cold work getting to shore, putting wires around the rocks and pulling out the wet lines. In the morning everything was covered in snow. However some washing stayed on the lines all night and was dry by the morning! Everywhere we go we have instructions to avoid going to close to the penguins. They have no similar instructions, this is a Chilean base and the penguins clearly think they are in charge with their nests right up to the walls of the cabins and they do not like to give way to people who want to walk back and forth.

Anoche hacían bastante viento y nieve. Estamos tres veleros amarrados juntos. Necesitabamos despertarnos unos veces para poner mas sogas a la playa. El trabajo fue muy frío: poner cables de acero por las rocas y traer las sogas empapadas del barco. Por la mañana todo tuvo una manta de nieve. Unas ropas mojadas quedó por la linea, y fueron secas. Tenemos direcciones que no molestar los pingüinos. No tienen los mismos direcciones. Esta un base Chileno pero los pingüinos obviamente piensen que son en cargo. Sus nidos alcanzan las paredes de las cabañas y no les gustan dar paso a los seres humanos que quieren van y ven.

Penguins and laundry

Today it was calm and clear, we took turns walking to the top of the island. The view was superb and we could see the vast expanse of ice and snow that covers everything. Only a few, very steep, mountains stick out. Near the beach there were 10-20 penguin colonies (Gentoo). Each has about 100 birds. Between some of them there were deep tracks in the snow along which the little Charlie Chaplin's waddle with their comical gait. One person stayed near the boat, in case of a sudden change in the weather. I took the chance to do some laundry. The water ran out of the bottom of a cliff of ice and froze on the beach, creating a circular basin of ice in which to wash. Even with insulated gloves it was cold. And the laundry was quite stiff by the time I got back to Balaena to hang it up!

Hoy hacia tranquilo y despejado, teníamos turnos para subir la isla. Las vistas fueron maravillosas y podemos ver grandes extensiones de hielo y nieve encima de toda. Unos muy empinados montañas se destacaron. Cerca de la playa fueran 10-20 colonias de pingüinos (Pingüino Papuda). Cada una tiene alrededores de 100 aves. Entre unas hay caminos excavados en la nieve y por ellas caminan los pequeños Charlie Chaplins con manera comicial. Una persona se quedó cerca del barco para estar lista para cambios del tiempo. Aproveché mi turno para lavar ropa. El agua cayó de un precipicio de hielo y se congeló por la playa, se hizo una baño de hielo en que pueda lavar. No obstante mis guantes aislados fue frío. Y cuando llegué al barco la ropa fue bastante rígido.

The Chilean radio station that receives our email is not working. This comes via Panama and we can send and receive very little. All is well.

La estación Chilena que recibe el mail no funciona. Este es via Panama y no podemos mandar mucho. Todo esta bien.

Hermosa

El mejor día de la navegación. Hace sol y un poco de viento. El paisaje es super linda y andabamos lentamente disfrutando de las ballenas y témpanos. Ahora estamos fondeado y preparando un cena muy RICA. Otra vez pizza.

The best day of our trip so far. The sun shone and we had a light wind. The scenery is very beautiful and we sailed slowly enjoying the whales and icebergs. Now we are anchored and preparing a tasty dinner- pizza again.

Staying still

Ya estamos en el mismo lugar. Es buen protegido y tranquilo y tenemos la compañía de dos veleros holandés. Fuimos para caminar por el ventisquero hasta que no parecen seguro. Por la noche vengan los holandeses para cenar.

We are still in the same place. It is well protected and quiet and we have the company of two Dutch yachts. We went walking on the glacier - as far as we thought was safe. Our Dutch friends are joinging us for dinner.

Tranquility

Afrter a short sail through magnificent icebergs (like modern art sculptures) we are anchored in Enterprise harbour, near the wreck of a whaling ship. We have company: yet another Dutch yacht. We have domestic chores to attend to- washing, showering and filling the water tanks and baking bread....

Después de una corta navegación tras témpanos magníficos (como escultura moderna) estamos fondeado en Puerto Enterprise, cerca de una cazadora de ballenas hundida. Tenemos compañía, aun otra velero holandés. Hacemos tareas domesticas - lavar ropa, duchar, meter agua en los estanques, hacer pan......

Ice and snow

In the morning we were sailing in the snow. It was exciting to see the icebergs through the snow and on the radar. We arrived early and were able to take a walk on the snow and see Weddell and Fur seals. Aboard all is well. Each evening we play card when we eat. Leif is learning fast.

Navegamos por la mañana en la nieve. Fue impresionante ver los témpanos tras la nieve y por el radar. Llegamos temprano y podemos disfrutar caminar por la nieve y ver focas Weddell y lobos. Por el barco todo sigue bien. Jugamos a naipes todos los tardes cuando comemos. Leif esta aprendiendo muy rápido.
