Tranquility

Afrter a short sail through magnificent icebergs (like modern art sculptures) we are anchored in Enterprise harbour, near the wreck of a whaling ship. We have company: yet another Dutch yacht. We have domestic chores to attend to- washing, showering and filling the water tanks and baking bread....

Ice and snow

In the morning we were sailing in the snow. It was exciting to see the icebergs through the snow and on the radar. We arrived early and were able to take a walk on the snow and see Weddell and Fur seals. Aboard all is well. Each evening we play card when we eat. Leif is learning fast.

Navegamos por la mañana en la nieve. Fue impresionante ver los témpanos tras la nieve y por el radar. Llegamos temprano y podemos disfrutar caminar por la nieve y ver focas Weddell y lobos. Por el barco todo sigue bien. Jugamos a naipes todos los tardes cuando comemos. Leif esta aprendiendo muy rápido.

Taking it easy

It is raining/snowing and cold. But in the boat we have the warmth of our wood stove and good food. After a meal of steak and rice with a mushroom and cream sauce we plan to watch a film and sleep early. Outside the ice is restless, at times hundreds of tons fall from the face of the glacier, creating a lot of noise and making waves that rock the boat. But it is a safe place.

Hace lluvia/nieve y es frío. Pero adentro del barco tenemos calor de la salamandra y buenos comidas. Después de comer carne con arroz y salsa de crema y hongos vamos a ver una película y dormir temprano. Afuera el hielo no es tranquilo, a veces cayó cientos de tonneladas de hielo de un ventisquero con mucho ruido y olas que hace el barco balancear. Pero el lugar es seguro.

lovely day

Today was the first nice day in Antarctica. It was sunny with light breezes. But it was long day and we arrived late at Murray Harbour, which is a very pretty spot. There are ice cliffs on all sides and our mooring lines go to a little islet with seals sunbathing on the snow, just like girls would sunbathe on a sandy beach. During the trip I baked a cake and Magnus prepared pizza so we are going to dine well.

Hoy estaba la primera hermoso día en Antarctica. Hace sol y viento ligero. Pero fue una jornada larga y llegamos tarde en Caleta Murray, que es muy linda. Hay precipices de hielo por todos lados, tenemos cuerdas para amarra a una isla con dos lobos grandes que tomar el sol por la nieve - exactamente como las chicas tomar sol por una playa de arena. Icebergs and snow

Today we sailed south, towards the Antarctic continent. half the time we were able to sail and half we had to use the engine. Using the motor is not so bad because it warms the cabin. That was good because it is cold today and we met big icebergs for the first time on this trip. It was snowing and the decks were white and visibility poor. Luckily we have radar and could see the bergs. We were late arriving at Mikkelsen and the anchorage is very poor, so we expect a restless night.

Hoy navegamos al sur, rumbo el continente. Medio tiempo hace viento bueno y podemos andar con vela, y medio tiempo necesitamos usar motor. El motor no es tan malo porque hace calor en la cabaña. Esta bien porque hoy hace frío y encontramos con témpanos grandes, icebergs, por primera vez. Estaba en el nieve con cubierta blanca y muy malo la visibilidad. Por suerte tenemos radar y podemos ver el hielo. Llegamos tarde por Mikkelson y el fundeadero es malo, esperamos una noche no muy tranquilo.

Fondeado

We spent the day at Deception Island. It is an ugly place with a lot of volcanic cinders and mud that make everything appear very dirty. There are hot springs on the beach, and they are hot, despite this the water did not seem inviting. And we did not fancy changing clothes in the chilly wind. There is a lot of activity here with a Brazilian ship, ourselves and our Dutch friends, a luxury motor yacht and cruise ships that pop in from time to time. Tomorrow, if the weather is fair we plan to sail to the continent.

Pasamos el día en Isla Deception. Es un lugar muy feo con muchos cenizas y barro que hacen todo parecer muy sucio. Hay termas por la playa, pero no obstante que es cálido, el agua no nos invitó para nadar. También no podemos pensar de cambiar ropa en el viento frío. Hay mucha actividad aquí con un buque brasileño, nosotros y los amigos holandeses, una motor yate de lujo y también cruceros que vengan a veces. Mañana esperamos ir al continente si siervo el tiempo.

A long day - Una jornada larga

We got up early with a good forecast. But the sailing has been slow because there is very little wind and we don't want to use up our fuel. But the views are spectacular, and there were whales along the way and many penguins of course. We are nearing Deception island, it is the first time we have sailed into the crater of an active volcano. The whole island is covered with ash (in layers over the ice). It is not supposed to be dangerous because it is 50 years since a major eruption. But there is a lot of volcanic activity and we expect to bath in hot water.

Nos levantamos temprano con buen pronostico. Pero la navigación fue muy lento porque no sopló el viento y no queremos usar demasiado combustible. Pero la vista es espectacular, y estaban ballenas por la ruta y muchos pingüinos por supuesto. Acercamos Isla Deception. Estará la primera vez que naveguemos en la caldera de un volcán activo. Toda la isla es cubierta con cenizas (laminado con el hielo.) No hay peligro porque había 50 años desde la ultima eruption grande. Pero hay mucha actividad y esperamos bañarnos en agua caliente.

Stormy weather

One of the good things in this trip are the weather forecasts that we receive twice a day from a worldwide digital system we call "grib". They are incredibly accurate and with them we can decide whether to sail or stay in harbour. today we stayed at anchor because, despite looking promising this morning, we were expecting a gale. It arrived at the predicted time and we are glad to be in a safe spot. With luck we can sail on to Deception Island tomorrow. however the day has been productive and we have got on with jobs such as repairing a sail and sail cove.

Unas de las cosas buenas para nosotros son las pronósticos meteorológicos que recibimos dos veces al día desde una sistema digital mundial, "grib". Son increíbles exacto y con ellos podemos decidir si vamos a navegar o quedarnos en puerto. hoy quedamos porque, a pesar de pareció buen por la mañana, esperabamos un temporal. Llegó a la hora de predicción y ahora agradeceremos que estamos fondeado en un buen lugar. Ojalá mañana podemos proseguir el viaje hasta Isla Deception. No obstante pasamos un día productiva con las tareas del barco como renovar una vela y una capa de vela.

penguins and snow

We spent today in the same place. It is beautiful with many penguins and enormous glaciers all around. Last night we had a gale with horizontal snow and today everything is white. We had a walk along the beach and then a good dinner with Dutch friends.

Pasamos el día en el mismo sitio. Es hermosa con muchos pingüinos y enormes ventisqueros por todos lados. Anoche hace un temporal con nieve horizontal y por la mañana todo el mundo fue blanco. Caminabamos por la playa y cenamos con amigos holandeses.

Ice and whales

Tonight we have moved to another bay, on the other side of Greenwich Island, Yankee harbour. There is a huge glacier sharing the bay with us, so there are lots of small bits of ice around the boat. It has been cold and grey all day so we have kept the pot belly burning and are warm and dry. It was an easy sail around the island with little wind, only a couple of whales to see along the way. Now Magnus (who spent the afternoon looking after the sails) is cooking roast beef for dinner.

Esta noche estamos colocado en otra bahía, Yankee harbour, por otro lado de isla Greenwich. Hay un ventisquero enorme que compartir la bahía con nosotros, entonces hay bastante témpanos alrededor del barco. Todo el día estaba frío y gris y manteníamos la salamandra incendio y adentro hace calor y es seco. La navegación por vela fue fácil con poco viento y unas ballenas para ver. Ahora Magnus (que pasó la tarde cuidando las velas) es cocinado carne asado para la cena.

Llegamos Arrival

We are in Antarctica. What is it like? you ask. Well, it is mainly ice - I don't know why I should be surprised by that, but the tales of global warming had turned my mind. We are anchored behind some small islands that only have a few small patches of snow (dotted with black patches - penguins) The islands of the South Shetlands appear to be only glacier. Up to now the wildlife is almost entirely penguins - many varieties, swimming around us and out at sea. But of course there were also hundreds of seabird's.

To celebrate we had a dinner of fillet mignon and a good bottle of wine and now e}we are preparing for the first quiet nights sleep in 4 days.

Estamos en Antártica. ¿Como es? Pregunten. Pues, la mayoría es hielo - no sé porque me sorprende esta cosa , pero las historia de aumento de temperatura global ha dado vuelta a mis ideas. Estamos fondeado detrás de unas isletas, que solo tienen unos manchitas de nieve (salpicado con puntitas de negra - pingüinos). Las islas grandes de islas Shetland del sur son solo ventisqueros. Hasta ahora la vida silvestre es casi exclusivamente pingüinos, de algunos tipos, nadando por las alrededores y mar adentro. Por supuesto también estaba cientos de aves de mar.

Para celebra comemos una cena de filete mignon con un buen vino y ahora estamos preparando para dormir tranquilo la primera ves en 4 días.

Nearly there

The barometer is as low as it can go -960 -bottom of the scale. But I think the pressure is always low here. It is blowing hard but we can still sail and hope to arrive at English Strait on Greenwich Island tomorrow morning. We have our sea legs and are quite comfortable. Baked potatoes for dinner - the over warms the cabin nicely.

El barómetro es tan bajo que es posible - 960 - la minima de la escala. Pienso es normal aquí. El viento sopla fuerte pero ya tenemos velamen y esperamos llegar en Estrecho Inglés, Isla Greenwich, mañana por la mañana. Estamos acostumbrada al mar y no mareamos mas. Good progress

We had a very stormy departure from Cape Horn and were all seasick and quite wet for the first 30 hours. But the wind was favorable and we covered 150 miles. Now it is quieter and almost calm and we are motoring, which means that the cabin is warm - it is getting cool outside. I don't think there is much risk of ice yet but we will start to use the radar tonight. Hopefully we will arrive in the S Shetland Islands on Wednesday.

El saliendo de Cabo de Hornos fue muy tempestoso. Todo el mundo estuvieron mareado y bastante mojado las primeras 30 horas. Pero el viento estaba bueno y logramos 150 millas (270km). Ahora hace mas tranquila y andamos por motor, que significa que tenemos calor el la cabaña - afuera hace frío. No creo que ya hay gran posibilidad de témpanos pero esta noche empezaremos usar radar. Ojalá llegaremos en las Islas South Shetland el miércoles.

About to go

At last the forcast is improving, the baragraph is rising and we may have a suitable weather window to cross the Drake passage. We are leaving in one hour. Wind W 25 knots and raining.

Por fin el pronostico esta mejorando y el barógrafo esta subiendo. Ojalá tenemos una ventana en el tiempo para la travesía del Drake. Zarpamos en una hora. Viento oeste y 25 nudos, con lluvia.

Stormy weather

Today it feels as though we are near to Cape Horn. The wind is howling and rain is coming in heavy showers every hour. But we are warm and dry and Balaena is very secure. It is lovely not to be sailing in this weather but a little frightening to think what it could be like in a few days if we are not lucky with the weather. It has been a good opportunity for me to catch up with writing tasks and for Magnus to familiarize himself with Antarctic anchorages. Leif is taking it easy after walking all day yesterday.

Hoy nos sentimos como estamos cerca de Cabo de Hornos. El viento aullar y la lluvia viene en chubascos fuertes cada hora. No obstante estamos cálidos y secos y Balaena esta muy seguro. Esta estupendo no esta navegando con esta tiempo pero me da miedo pensar como puede estar en unos días si no tenemos suerte con el tiempo. Estaba un buen oportunidad para mi alcanza con tareas de escribir y para Magnus familiarizarse con fondeaderos en la Antarctica. Leif descansa después de caminar todo el día ayer.

Nutria

Another quiet day with pleasant weather in the anchorage though it is blowing hard outside and the barograph is dropping. Now we are three boats, a beautiful ketch from the USA has joined our group. In the morning we were visited by an otter that spent half an hour swimming around us and inspecting us closely.

Otro día tranquilo con tiempo agradable en el fondeadero pero hay temporal afuera y cae el barógrafo. Estamos tres: un hermoso yate de EE.UU. ahora esta socio. Por la mañana nos visitó una nutria que pasó media hora dando vuelta al barco y nos miró muy cerca.

Sunshine and wind

We are still waiting in Puerto Maxwell for a change in the weather. Here it is very pleasant with sunshine and nice conditions for long walks ashore, but at sea the wind is blowing hard and the forecast is still bad. We have the comany of a Dutch boat, also waiting to sail to Antarctica and good food and books. Tonight Andy is cooking chickpea curry.

Ya esperamos en Puerto Maxwell para un cambio del tiempo. Esta muy agradable con mucho sol y buenos, largos, caminos por la isla. Mar adentro el viento sopla fuerte y el pronostico es malo. Tenemos compañía de un barco holandés, también esperando para navegar a Antarctica y buenas comidas y libros. Hoy Andy cocina curry de garbonzos.

Waiting for the weather

We are only a few miles from Cape Horn, lying in one of the best anchorages I know of. Perfect shelter, very pretty, plenty of wildlife and close to the ocean that we have to cross to arrive in Antarctica. The weather forecast is bad so we must wait patiently for an improvement, though today has been very pleasant with light winds again. We walked up the hill above the anchorage and were inspected very closely by a condor - the first time Leif has seen one - only a few meters away. A pair of dolphins live in the bay and slowly swam around Balaena last night for 20 minutes. There are geese and ducks and kingfishers with their young along the shores. In short - life is good.

Estamos solo unos kilómetros de Cabo de Hornos, en unos de los mejores fondeaderos que conozco. Buen abrigo, hermoso, mucha vida silvestre y cerca del océano que vamos a cruzar para llegar en Antarctica. El pronostico es malo, entonces esperamos con paciencia para mejorando. No obstante, hoy estaba muy agradable con vientos livianos. Caminabamos por la colina encima del fondeadero y nos examinó muy cerca un condor - la primero vez que Leif lo veo un condor - solo unos metros lejos. Una pareja toninas viven en la bahía y anoche lentamente daban vuelta al barco. Hay gansos, patos y martin pescadores, todos con sus polluelos por la playa. Si, la vida es buena.

Day 3

A lovely day with hot sun and a light north wind. We are in tee-shirts and sunglasses and doing jobs like varnishing and making small repairs on deck. In short typical weather 30 miles from Cape Horn. We see lots of dolphins, seals, albatross and penguins. Last night Magnus cooked a superb meal with seafood and fresh spaghetti and tonight we have a chicken dish on the menu. So we are enjoying the soft life prior to crossing Drake Passage. From the weather charts it looks as though we will be spending a few days in Caleta Maxwell, our destination for today.

Un día hermoso con sol y débil brisa del norte. Estamos en camisetas y anteojos de sol y haciendo tareas como barniz y pequeños reparaciones por la cubierta. ¡Es decir - tiempo típico para Cabo de Hornos! Hay muchos, toninas, lobos, albatros y penguinos. Anoche Magnus cocinó una cena muy rico con tallarines y mariscos y hoy por la noche tenemos pollo por la menu.
Disfrutamos la vida buena antes de irnos mar adentro en Passage de Drake. De el pronostico parece que vayamos a pasar unos días en Puerto Maxwell, nuestra destinación.

Salimos

G'day from Balaena. We are motoring south between Islas Navarino and Picton, heading south towards Cape Horn. Once there we will be waiting for fine weather before setting off towards the Antarctic Peninsula. Balaena has a crew of three: myself, Magnus my son and Leif Frejdestedt from Sweden. Unfortunately our friend Fabio from Brazil could not come, but he may be sailing south on Paratii 2 from Santos and we hope to meet up with him.
